Decor to Die for: Color Crave, Almost Blue...

The other day I had an moment of inspiration... A stroke of brilliance....
I just knew we needed to paint the master bedroom a deep, dark, beautiful blue!

Then I thought... Hmmmm, maybe I should sit on that for a few days.

And while I love and admire the balls or even better the CAJONES it takes to boldly paint a room this amazing color, I am afraid I may lack them.

A well done navy blue room can be so perfect it hurts, like this tiny kitchen in Ruthie Sommers Venice Beach bungalow... The turquoise doors? PLEASE!

The Matte walls and navy lacquer doors from the Elle Decor (?) feature...
Heaven.

Dark blue can be crisp and clean when mixed with white.
It can be festive and happy when mixed with bright pops of color....
If you do it wrong though... It is gonna be a hot, hot mess!

So I think I am gonna sit on this color crave a little bit longer, maybe in a literal sense.... I could quench my taste for blue with this STUUUPID Anthro Settee that I have been lusting over since summer...

Or for a lot less money, I could fill my house with these beautiful blue Capri Candles that smell as good as they look.
Or, I could put my money where my mouth is and support a budding artist!
Looking around on Etsy for navy blue I found this delicious photo!

I have a feeling it would look great in a master bedroom!
(MINE)

In honor of my "Almost Blue" room... Here is another one of our Fake Boyfriends singing "Almost Blue".... Try not to cry, we know it's THAT GOOD.

Color Crave: Pretty in pastel pink...

(Photo: Feministing)
While we are aware that we have bloged about our love for pink before... We are so hearting baby pastel pink right now we had to give it another go.
If you read about color therapy, they say that pastel pink represents compassion and an open heart. Perhaps that is why we are craving this color right now...

For just a hint of this lovely color, Lou Rota makes these amazingly Rocking Granny china plates. You can get yourself some at Not On The High Street.

(Photo: Elle Decor)
Ready to commit, well first answer us this, Are you as bad ass girly girl as the one and only Betsey Johnson? If you have answered "YES!!" to that question... Can we meet you and be your friends? A yes answer also allows you to live in a all pink super chic world like Miss Johnson herself!

The photo above and this one bellow of Betsey Johnson's apartment are both proof that all pink decor when done right, is super swoon worthy and jealousy inducing!

(Photo: Elle Decor)

Can you believe that you never thought of this before? And we always thought we had such a way with flower arranging...
Amazing loosey goosey Peony flowers in a mason jar... with coffee beans!!!!
(Yep we feel it deserved four exclamation points, its that good.)

Now if only one of our closest friends would hurry up and either get married or have a baby girl we could use this flower arrangement at their shower...

Look at your wall.... Is it looking a little bare? Do you need a little Umph? (Yes it is a real word, we think), then how about this simply adorable pink print from artist Faroush? You can grab yours over on Etsy.

(Photo: Faroush)
Now while we have seen this saying on a print before... We are super big fans of this version... Love the little white scalloped border and the black needle, it is so Cinderella and her mice.

Looking for more of a pop? Another Etsy find... JohnWGolden has these pop art, tough girl converse on a pink background. We would hang this one right in the bathroom... We know that may not sound like the biggest compliment, but to us it is... Right over the toilet is a place of honor... It sets the tone for your house's style. Plus everyone will see it!

(Photo: JohnWGolden)

Leave it to Kelly W. to be way ahead of the crowd. When we first saw her guest house in Domino we were a little confused, she had changed up her style on us.. But of course she found a great new one...

(Photo: Domino Magazine :()
Oh, how we covet this tableaux! Oh, how we wish this was our room! The painting, the brass lamp, the amethyst encrusted box.. Perfection!

Look close our loves, and you will see that this beautiful bride is wearing a blush toned wedding gown... Do word exist to say how much we heart that? No.

Another super beautiful lineup of pink comes in this pretty photo from one of our most fave sites, Decor 8.

So pretty.
And this delicious and pretty pink cake would make any birthday girl smile.
These stairs are what inspired this post.. Although I am sad to say that I have had this picture on my computer for so long floating around in my "Inspiration" folder, that I don't remember where I found it. :(

But, I do know that the combination of pink and white stairs plus the super cute Mama and Baby in the background make me really happy.

This baby pink wall with antique mirrors also makes me really happy! Check out that light pink velvet tufted sofa... N.K.Y I wish I knew who made it, I would try and get you a red one!

Another really pretty flower arrangement we found on the beautiful site All Things Lovely. We heart the mercury glass vase and the pretty pink Ranunculus.

Even in little pops pink can always make yo smile, can always make you feel calm and happy.

Open your heart and let a little pink in to your world.

Color Crave: Che-Che-Che-Che-Cherry Bomb!

Now normally, red is not the top color on our list when we are looking for decor items. We get why people love the color red... But we usually find it a little too heavy for our taste.

That is of course unless you are talking about cherry red, and then we think that taste is just delicious!

We have been getting pretty swoony over pops of cherry red.
This kitchen for example, is just deliciously fresh and vibrant.

Of course it takes a lot of balls and a lot of lurve for the color red to have that kitchen.... We don't have cojones for that bold of a statement. We are kind of more into a small pop of red against a simple soft room...

Aaahhh... Bright red lamp, a few bright plates and a dreamy white washed room.
Now we are talking serious color crave!

So while we were wandering the wonderful world wide web we happened upon a super cutie. We love it when that happens.... All of a sudden from out of nowhere, you find someone with a creative mind pouring it out to the world at large and... WHAM.

Instant girl on girl/ blogger on blogger crush!
AB Chao, has an amazing blog and flickr site where she shows off her fantastic house and her do-it-your-self magic.

Ummm Seriously, she has a bright red vintage amplifier in her fireplace.
DONE!

And she got this amazing lamp at a garage sale, painted it red and rewired it herself... For like $15!
DONE!

And this super fantastic room she put together for her daughter?!
Every little pop of cherry red in her house is to-die-for inspirational!
DONE!

Moving on from the love-fest. We have tons more inspiration for your cherry bomb color crave fix.
Like this crazy A Clockwork Orange-ish chair! Against the amazing wall paper?!
Oh, we wish we knew where this photo came from! Someone please tell us if you know!

Another dreamy white kitchen with just one single pop of cherry. Woops! Did I say pop and cherry in the same breath?

Lets not talk dirty in a kitchen so clean! How can you not love all that white, grey and weathered wood floors? This kitchen just makes us wanna bake a cherry pie!

But you don't need that wonderful bright and happy red to be the only pop of color, red mixes so well with other brights to bring a beachy and vibe to your place.

(Stolen from Country Living)

That shot of bright red in a pale blue room with sharp black and white details...
"Oh welcome to our guest room, no you can't stay forever... Sorry, we know."

Perfect, perfect perfection for the faint of heart, or those just testing the cherry red waters... How about the perfect red throw?

Simple bright and delicious. Like vanilla ice cream with one perfect cherry on top.

Another idea is to scatter a few red books on your shelves and watch them pop!

Of course, one of the best ways you can bring that delicious cherry red into your home is with fresh bright and happy flowers.

Easy and affordable and sweet.

Try it, you might like it.

Decor to die for: Thanks for the compliment!

We love to break rules when it comes to fashion... No white after labor day?! You can't wear black and navy together?! Please.

And we love to break rules when it comes to beauty... No blue eyeliner? No pink lips? Sorry!

But recently Miss Me and Miss t-w-h were lounging in a beautiful vacation spot relaxing in the sun and talking about decor like they always do... When Miss t-w-h dropped a decorating rule she had just learned regarding dining rooms and the space around the chairs at the dining table.... I know just what you would expect us to talk about in paradise right?

It has taken us a long time and lots of trial and error... Not to mention a few trips back to the store to make returns and lots of repainting rooms to learn something very important. The more rules you know about decorating, the more helpful tips you pick up along the way.... The less stress and strife you will face while decorating your home.

Because your decor is not the wrong shade of lipstick or the way too short skirt you thought you could pull off. You are spending your serious hard earned cash on that sofa or that art print... You can't just toss it out and laugh about it later.

We learned that in decor, rules our our friends!

So, we wanted to start learning more about said rules, and whether you like it or not you are along for the ride.

First lesson Complimentary colors!
We will assume you have foggy pot coated memories of your high school art class and the basics of the color wheel. No? OK quick run down.

(Please forgive the weird spacing, I took this from the web)

The color wheel is an important piece of basic of color design. It is literally a wheel with twelve colors on it made up of primary, secondary and tertiary colors.

Primary Primary colors are colors that cannot be created by mixing with other colors. These are often referred to as the true colors, because you need them to create all the other colors. They are:

  • Red
  • Blue
  • Yellow

Secondary

Secondary colors are created by mixing primary colors. They are:

  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Violet

Tertiary

Tertiary colors are colors created by mixing a primary and secondary color. They are:

  • Yellow-orange
  • Red-orange
  • Red-violet
  • Blue-violet
  • Blue-green
  • Yellow-green
The place where the colors are on the wheel and where they are in relation to the other colors can tell us a great deal. It can tell us which colors will work well together.

All coming back to you now right?

Well, Complimentary colors are those that are opposite each other on the color wheel, and when you put them together they just sort of sing.

Use these combinations as a jumping off point for any room and you are sure to get it right.

For example:

Blue and Orange

Ahhhhh

Ohhhhh

Yummmmm!!!!

Yellow and Purple

Sighhhh

Wow.. Go Lakers...

Dreamy....

Island style

Just the right touch of yellow.

Red & Green

That works...

Delicious

Ahhhhh

J'adorable

Remember that when using complimentary colors you have the full spectrum of shades and tones to play with. For instance within the Orange and Blue complimentary range you can mix Turquoise and Salmon or Navy and Rust. In the Red and Green complimentary range you could use Bright Green and Watermelon Pink (one of our favorites!) or you could try Mint and Rose.

The possibilities are endless, and this is just lesson #1 on the color wheel! We haven't even started to tap into Analogous Colors (next to each other on color wheel) and Triad Colors (3 colors that form a triangle on the wheel)!

We have so much to learn!
Take the time to look at this site. Learn a little bit about color, you may be surprised at how much you already know instinctually about color theory. Look around your nest and see what you already have going on and then refine it, get inspired and have fun!

Because it is never too late to love rainbows!
